On World Theater Day, senior stage artist S.P. Mamgai honored

 

Dehradun, Aaj Khabar. Senior theater artist S. P. Mamgai was honored with the Life Time Achievement Award. Uttar Natya Sansthan honored Shri Mamgai for his unforgettable contribution in the field of theater and wished him a long life. On World Theater Day, he was given this honor by KS Chauhan, Joint Director of Information Department and MS Mandrawal, Registrar of Doon University.

S., a multifaceted talent as a senior theater artist, drama writer and translator. P. Mamgai was born on 9 April 1945 in Timli, Pauri Garhwal. After receiving primary education in Dehradun, he went to Lucknow and received higher education there. Shri Mamgai retired in 2004 after serving as an officer first in Uttar Pradesh Electricity Department and later in Uttarakhand Power Corporation after it became a separate state. Right at the beginning of his student life, Shri Mamgai acted in his first play in the year 1962 and after that there was no looking back. In this way, he has been continuously practicing in the field of theater for the last 62 years. Till now, he has directed more than 199 plays, acted in them, done pre-theatre work, written plays and refined the plays written years ago and performed them many times. In this way, he has done thousands of shows of his plays till now.

Prominent among the plays directed by Shri Mamgai are ‘Sarhad, Prithviraj Chauhan Shri Krishna Avatar’, ‘Veer Abhimanyu’ and ‘Ek Aur 1857’ etc. In the year 1972, the theater institute “Saras Kala Sangam” was established in the remote hilly area Srinagar (Garhwal) Jija Pauri. Contributed to the establishment of Shailnut in Srinagar in 1980 and later established Meghdoot Theater Institute in Dehradun and staged many plays of mythological and historical importance. Usha Anirudh Pranay, Sanjivani, Jyotirmoy Padmini, Bhay Binu Hoi Na Preet, the plays staged by him in recent years have been quite popular. Before the presentation of every new play, Mr. Mamgai gives two months of training to the new students and others in the theater genre along with practice of presentation as well as a drama workshop. In a way, they are walking schools for new artists. Folk music has played a prominent role as background music in his plays. For this reason his plays have become more popular. His skill in enhancing the plays with the touch of regionalism has been impressing the audience. Shri Mamgai had also made a regional film on Nagaraja Sem Mukhem with his own resources. This film, released in 2007, greatly impressed the regional audience. It is noteworthy that a week-long theater festival has started in Doon University on World Theater Day.
